Uniting Children with Their Mothers and Fathers in Prison

get-bus

During May and June, thousands of children and their caregivers board buses and travel from cities all over California to be united with their parents in prison. St. Joseph the Worker sponsors at least one bus trip every year. This may be the only day each year these children will see their parents.

Get On The Bus, founded by Sr. Suzanne Jabro, a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet, is a program of the Center for Restorative Justice Works, a non- profit organization that unites children, families, and communities separated by crime and the criminal justice system.

At no cost to the children’s families, Get On The Bus provides:

  • Free transportation for the children and their caregivers to the prison
  • Travel bags for the children
  • Comfort care bags for the caregivers
  • Photo of each child with his or her parent
  • Meals for the day (breakfast, snacks on the bus, lunch at the prison, and dinner on the way home)
  • Teddy bear for each child with a letter from their parent
  • Stay-connected bag for each child, containing  letter-writing essentials (stationery, envelopes, stamps, etc.)
  • Post-event counseling
